Imagine that your dad is the rock guitarist Slash, and he’s got his own new version for you of that old, old song about the sixpence and that pie full of blackbirds. Here’s a little of what you’d be hearing to rock you to sleep or to wake you up:

This is one of the songs, with and without words on a new CD called Sing a Song With Six Strings, featuring the work of thirteen musicians, who are normally known for their adult guitar talents, using their gifts here to make music for children. Among these artists, the incomparable Chet Atkins has a “Smokey Mountain Lullaby” that’s as tangy as the air on Mt. Pisgah; Keb’ Mo’ offers a tribute to grandparents everywhere in “Grandma’s Hands”; Carl Perkins introduces us to a rockabilly Mother Goose, and Carlos Santana is urging the most natural, mellow thing in the world for kids:
