Jules Verne on Film Transcript

Recess! correspondent Terry Harpold talks with Brian Taves.

Brief Sound Clip:

Brian Taves (PhD, University of Southern California) is a film archivist with the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C. He is senior author of The Jules Verne Encyclopedia (Scarecrow, 1996) and has published numerous articles on Verne and early 20th century cinema. He is currently working on a book on the more than 300 film and television adaptations of Verne made around the world, and is expanding his research on the author’s son, novelist and filmmaker Michel Verne, at the request of the Verne family.

Here are some of the films made from the novels of Jules Verne mentioned by Dr. Taves in this interview:

Around the World in 80 Days (USA, United Artists). Production: Michael Todd. Dirs. John Farrow and Michael Andersen. (1956)

Journey to the Center of the Earth (USA, 20th Century-Fox). Dir. Henry Levin. (1959)

Master of the World (USA, American International). Dir. William Whitney (1961)

The Fabulous World of Jules Verne (Czechoslovakia, released in the US by Warner Brothers). Dir. Karel Zeman (1958)

The WWW site of the North American Jules Verne Society (http://www.najvs.org/) includes links to many other Verne-related resources, including lists of recommended English translations in print and available online (Verne has been translated into more than 75 languages!), Verne biographies and criticism of his fiction and plays, contact information for other Verne societies, and advice about collecting 19th and early 20th century editions of the novels, some of the most beautiful illustrated books ever published.
