That’s What Little Girls are Made of

That’s Rebecca Pidgeon with the opening from her reverie, “Under the Table.” It’s on a new CD called That’s What Little Girls are Made of.  Many of the numbers on this recording are classics, like Stevie Wonder’s “Isn’t She Lovely”; and a few play right into some basic gender stereotypes: like Maurice Chevalier’s “Thank Heaven for Little Girls” and the Beach Boys’ “Surfer Girl.”

Thank heaven for the earthy reality of Eric Bibb, Taj Mahal, and the Cultural Heritage Choir doing “Miss Mary Mack” and other game songs, and for the coeducational delight of Maria Muldaur doing “Would You Like to Swing on a Star.”

The companion CD, What are Little Boys Made Of, also has some gender-specific spins: it’s heavy on dinosaurs, trains, pirates, and trucks — like the kind that Trout Fishing in America’s are singing about:

Thank heaven for Allan Sherman’s “Hello Muddah, Hello Fadduh!” and Livingston Taylor’s “Pajama’s” for all those guys who march to the tune of their own drummer:
