Brief Sound Clip:

That’s the New Orleans group, The Meters, with “They All Asked For You.” It’s their funky tribute to the city’s famous Audubon Zoo, and you can find it on a new CD from Putamayo Kids called New Orleans Playground. The list of performers on this recording reads like a Who’s Who of the city’s musicians. Clifton Chenier chugs into the station with his “Choo Choo Ch’Boogie.” Buckwheat Zydeco has its groove going for “Skip to My Blues.” The amazing Fats Domino adds his golden oldie from 1958, “Whole Lotta Lovin.” Dr. John has his mojo back with an up-tempo version of “Row Row Your Boat.” Charmaine Neville, of the famous Neville Family, keeps everyone’s spirits dancing with “Second Line.” The second line refers to the people who dance behind the bands during New Orleans’ parades — and you just can’t sit by with your sewing, rocking on the porch when the music comes down the street.

Part of the proceeds of this album go to the Louisiana Children’s Museum in New Orleans to aid in their efforts to bring music programs to the children of the still recovering city. The return of some of the rich legacy of music that was lost to New Orleans because of Katrina is one of those glimmers of hope, that the Saints will someday come marching in again. Here’s Hack Bartholomew to take things home.
