Brief Sound Clip:
The children singing, part of a group called Les Pétits Loups du Jazz from France, are clearly having some giddy fun with the idea of a nose to horn meeting with one of these huge creatures. This album is full of such unexpected and fantastical encounters of the human and animal worlds — from Trinadad to Chicago and round the globe to Australia and South Africa. Samba Salad from Suriname serves up a peppy kaseko called “Bigi Kaiman” about being careful to watch out for those kaiman crocodiles while you’re swimming.

Happily, not all of these meetings are with potentially dangerous animals. There’s a wonderful Italian version of “Old MacDonald Had a Farm,” and there are plenty of frogs doing the samba in Zé Renato’s “Cantigo do Sapo” from Brazil.

And then there are The Be Good Tanyas from Canada who have something important to remind us about, the birds.
